The EDS CalWORKS Information Network (CalWIN) project
has successfully replaced a 30-year-old legacy system
with the largest human services system of its kind in
the county. CalWIN is a mission-critical technological
cornerstone for collecting and sharing information among
agencies supporting 30,000 end users in their social
service provision efforts in more than 800 locations
throughout California -- and it relies on IRI's CoSORT
for AIX. According to EDS Chief Technologist Dan Gonos,
CoSORT's high level of application throughput allows
CalWIN to rapidly transform tremendous data volumes
into meaningful information that field workers need
every day.

Exelcom and Telkomsel are
large telecommunication service providers in the world's
fifth-most populous nation, Indonesia. Both are good
examples of high volume call detail generators requiring
a highly-scalable data staging solution. After an extensive
market analysis and price-performance evaluation, their
consultant chose the new combination of CoSORT's FACT
and SortCL
to extract and transform millions of new transaction
rows within a narrow overnight Oracle
ETL production window. Specifically, between the

Chain Execution application suite delivers dramatic

Transamerica Life Canada (Transamerica)
is a market leader in the sale of life insurance and
investment products in Canada. Their mainframe administrative
system is a series of COBOL programs and associated
utilities, some of which run under a Customer Information
Control System (CICS) to provide the interactive online
transaction processing (OLTP) functions. All the applications
use data stored in a VSAM database. Sun's Mainframe
Rehosting Program (MRP) professional services successfully
migrated Transamerica's functionality to Sun hardware
running "a job control language (JCL), a 4GL called
FOCUS, a report writer called EASYTRIEVE, and a sort
utility called CoSORT."

the evolution of CoSORT from a mainframe sort migration
solution to a data warehouse ETL package that combines
many other non-sort functions to produce integrated
hand-offs and reports from high data volumes. CoSORT's
join feature was released after this article went to
press.
